Fukushima Fuel Debris Sent For Off-site Analysis

Wedoany.com Report-Nov 19,   Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) says fuel debris sampled from unit 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP has been transported to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency’s (JAEA) Oarai Nuclear Engineering Institute.

The fuel debris sample from the containment vessel at unit 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP was successfully retrieved earlier in November using a specially developed device. This followed several earlier failed attempts since the plant in Fukushima Prefecture suffered a meltdown following the massive March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in which three reactors suffered a reactor meltdown.

The transported fuel debris will be analysed over a period of between several months and approximately one year at analysis facilities such as the JAEA. Tepco says the data acquired “will be leveraged to deliberate when gradually enlarging the scope of fuel debris retrieval in the future”. The company added: “We will continue to prioritise safety as we move forward with this task.”
