Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, Carnegie subsidiaries CETO Wave Energy Ireland and Carnegie Technologies Spain have secured a €600,000 contract with the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) to install and test wave energy technology. This agreement marks a significant step for Carnegie Clean Energy, the developer of the CETO system, which harnesses ocean wave energy to produce electricity.
The contract stipulates that the CETO technology will be deployed and evaluated at the BiMEP location in the Basque Country, Spain, as part of Carnegie’s ACHIEVE programme. This follows an earlier Berth Reservation Agreement and outlines terms for the setup, operation, and eventual removal of the CETO system at the site over a two-year period. BiMEP will support the project by providing essential offshore infrastructure, including mooring space, submarine power cables, electrical connectors, and fibre optics, alongside onshore facilities such as an electrical substation, power lines, and office areas. These resources will allow CETO to generate and supply electricity to the grid.
In the coming months, BiMEP will carry out scheduled upgrades at the site, involving the removal of outdated equipment and the installation of a new electrical connector for the CETO project. Carnegie will gain access to the location once these improvements are finalized. The company views this deployment as a vital milestone in advancing CETO toward commercialization, aiming to achieve important technical and commercial results.
Jonathan Fiévez, Carnegie’s chief executive, emphasized the strategic value of the BiMEP site: “BiMEP offers top-tier facilities, a cooperative team, and demanding sea conditions. This is exactly why we selected it for CETO’s deployment, and we’re eager to showcase its performance and dependability here.” The choice reflects a focus on testing the technology in a robust environment to validate its potential.
Miguel Santos-Herran, project manager for the ACHIEVE programme, highlighted the company’s growing presence in the region: “We’re delighted to strengthen our ties to the Basque Country. With our new offices established locally, we’re ready to move forward with installing wave buoys, conducting site preparations, and completing pre-deployment tasks ahead of CETO’s rollout.” This phase will involve practical steps to ensure a smooth installation process.
The collaboration with BiMEP underscores a shared commitment to advancing renewable energy solutions. By leveraging the site’s infrastructure and expertise, Carnegie aims to refine and demonstrate the capabilities of its CETO technology, contributing to the broader development of wave energy as a sustainable power source.
