Iberdrola Wins Approval for 315MW Windanker

2025-04-05 10:00

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 5, Iberdrola, a Spanish energy company, has secured planning approval for its 315MW Windanker offshore wind farm in Germany. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) granted the approval, marking a key milestone for the project located in the German Baltic Sea. This development clears the way for construction to begin, advancing Iberdrola’s renewable energy efforts in the region.

Windanker is Iberdrola’s third offshore wind project in the German Baltic Sea, following the 350MW Wikinger and 476MW Baltic Eagle wind farms. Together, these projects form the company’s Baltic Hub, with a combined capacity of 1.1GW. The Windanker project, valued at €1 billion, is progressing on schedule. Spanish firm Windar is manufacturing the 21 foundation structures, including monopiles and transition pieces, for the wind farm. Installation of the foundations and internal cabling is set to start at sea during the summer of 2025.

The wind farm will feature 21 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD turbines, each generating around 15MW. Once operational in 2026, Windanker’s 315MW capacity will supply electricity to approximately 315,000 households. Iberdrola has already secured power purchase agreements (PPAs) with industrial and commercial clients for the energy produced, ensuring a steady demand for the output.

Felipe Montero, chief executive of Iberdrola Germany, commented on the approval: “With the approval of the BSH, we have come a big step closer to realising our Baltic Hub in the German Baltic Sea. In total, our three wind farms will have a capacity of 1.1GW. We are continuing our growth course and clearly demonstrating Iberdrola’s commitment to the German renewable energy market.” His statement reflects the company’s focus on expanding clean energy infrastructure in Germany.

In December 2024, Japan’s Kansai energy company acquired a 49% stake in Windanker, while Iberdrola maintains a 51% majority share. This partnership strengthens the project’s financial backing as it moves toward completion. Construction preparations are underway, with the installation phase marking a significant step in bringing the wind farm online.

Windanker underscores Iberdrola’s growing presence in offshore wind energy. The Baltic Hub enhances Germany’s renewable energy capacity, supporting the transition to sustainable power sources. With foundations set for summer installation and turbines slated for 2026 operation, the project aligns with broader efforts to meet energy needs through environmentally friendly solutions.
