Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 14, Spanish renewable energy company Matrix Renewables has entered the UK energy market through a partnership with Green BESS Developments (UK). The collaboration focuses on developing two standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Scotland, located at Eccles and Kilmarnock. These projects are expected to deliver 1 gigawatt of power and 2 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity.
The BESS projects will be connected to the grid by 2027.
Situated along key transmission routes connecting Scotland and England, the Eccles and Kilmarnock sites were chosen for their ability to enhance grid reliability. The projects support the UK’s shift toward sustainable energy sources by providing essential storage to balance power supply. Both facilities are planned to connect to the grid by 2027.
This partnership marks Matrix Renewables’ first step into the UK’s expanding energy storage and renewable infrastructure sector. Backed by TPG Rise, the company aims to develop over 2 gigawatts of new storage and generation projects across the UK by 2028. This expansion involves an investment exceeding £1 billion ($1.3 billion) and is expected to create jobs in the region.
Sergio Arbeláez, managing director for Matrix Renewables in Europe and Latin America, highlighted the strategic importance of the move, stating: “Matrix is excited to continue growing our European portfolio. Announcing our entry into the UK aligns with our investment strategy and further diversifies our technology mix.” He added: “The UK is the most advanced market in Europe for standalone battery storage, and these projects anchor our in-country operations and development capabilities with a meaningful presence in the flexible generation space.”
Matrix Renewables is actively engaging with a leading UK-based engineering, procurement, and construction contractor to finalize project details and delivery plans. The company is committed to supporting the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy system through long-term investment and expertise.
Karel Nohejl, board chairman of Green BESS Developments (UK), expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating: “We are pleased to conclude this partnership with Matrix, who will continue the development of these projects.” He further noted: “Both Eccles and Kilmarnock BESS projects are a strategically important part of the UK’s green transition and will significantly contribute to grid stability. We wish Matrix all the best in bringing these projects through the construction phase.”
The partnership builds on Matrix Renewables’ recent activities, including its acquisition of two BESS facilities in Italy from Emeren Group in January 2024. The Eccles and Kilmarnock projects strengthen the company’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure while supporting the UK’s clean energy goals.
