Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 15, The Redding Rancheria, a federally recognized tribe in South Redding, California, has begun construction on a 190,000-square-foot health village. This initiative, developed in collaboration with LPA Design Studios, seeks to create a comprehensive wellness facility for the tribe’s community, with an expected opening in 2027.
The design process was a collective effort among LPA’s various practices.
The three-story Redding Rancheria Tribal Health Village aims to be California’s largest tribal health facility. It will serve descendants of the Pit River, Wintu, and Yana peoples by offering integrated care focused on overall well-being. Glen Hayward, executive director of health services at Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System, stated: “This health village is not just about treatment; it’s about transformation. It will focus on whole-body wellness, integrated nutrition, behavioural health and preventative care.”
The facility will provide a wide range of services, including primary care, dentistry, behavioral health, physical therapy, fitness training, senior nutrition, and rehabilitation. It will feature indoor and outdoor natatoriums, a multipurpose gymnasium, an indoor running track, and studios for yoga and fitness classes. A demonstration kitchen will support nutrition education, while community spaces will host programs on parenting and counseling for behavioral health and addiction.
LPA, a multidisciplinary firm with over 500 professionals in California and Texas, worked closely with the tribe to design a facility reflecting its cultural values and needs. Muhsin Lihony, LPA’s director of healthcare, noted: “Redding Rancheria is taking a holistic approach to addressing the historical challenges facing the health and success of Native Americans. This new facility is designed as a resource for generations, reflecting Redding Rancheria’s unique needs and heritage.”
The health village emphasizes a whole-person approach to care, allowing doctors to prescribe activities like exercise classes, swimming, or yoga to enhance patient outcomes. The design incorporates contributions from LPA’s landscape architecture team, which developed outdoor spaces, walking trails, an indoor-outdoor auditorium, and community gardens. The Sport + Rec team integrated aquatic and recreational elements to promote active lifestyles.
This project represents a significant step toward improving community health and wellness for the Redding Rancheria. By combining modern healthcare with cultural sensitivity, the facility aims to support long-term well-being and foster a stronger, healthier future for tribal members.
