Wedoany.com Report-Jan 2, Hitachi Rail’s digital railway solutions success across the world.
Hitachi Rail has announced an initiative in Toronto linked to the development of a new generation of its Communications-Based Train Control technology, known as SelTracTM. The company is combining artificial intelligence, 5G communications, and cloud computing in its next iteration of CBTC, citing goals such as reducing operating costs and increasing efficiency for urban rail operators. The project involves the addition of 100 skilled roles in Toronto, bringing the company’s Canadian workforce to over 1,200 employees.
This undertaking is supported by funding from the provincial government, including an allocation made through the Invest Ontario Fund. It builds on the company’s established presence in Ontario, where it has already taken part in transit infrastructure projects in locations such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa. Officials describe the province as a center for technology and mobility-related expertise.
Digital signalling and telecommunications on Turkish high-speed rail
Hitachi Rail’s investment also includes activity in Turkey, where the company is installing digital signalling and telecommunications on the Ankara–Istanbul and Ankara–Sivas high-speed rail routes. The infrastructure on the Geyve–Doğançay segment is being upgraded with systems conforming to European standards, known as ETCS Levels 1 and 2, and an updated interlocking arrangement that governs train movements. The improvements aim to align safety and operating approaches with European frameworks.
On the Ankara–Sivas line, Hitachi Rail is applying a centralised traffic control system and ETCS signalling to a 160-kilometre section between Kayas and Yerkoy. Trains can reach speeds of up to 250 km/h there, reducing travel times and offering expanded rail connectivity. The project is part of a broader modernization effort across Turkey’s high-speed rail network, developed under the oversight of the Turkish State Railways.
