Wedoany.com Report-Feb 14, Dragados Offshore is planning to add a new production site with 400,000 square metres of space in Spain for the manufacturing of TenneT’s 2 GW offshore converter stations.
The production site is currently being built in the southern Spanish coastal town of Algeciras (Campo de Gibraltar region).
From 2026, two platform topsides will be built at the new production site for the LanWin2 and BalWin3 offshore grid connection systems, which are scheduled to transmit offshore wind power from the German North Sea to land in 2030 and 2031, respectively.
According to the transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT, the new Spanish shipyard site complements the existing Dragados shipyard in Cádiz/Puerto Real, where another platform is being built for the LanWin4 grid connection system (completion expected in 2031).
“We are laying the foundation for investments worth millions in the series production of 2 gigawatt converter platforms at this location, thereby securing the expansion of power transmission technology in the German North Sea and at the same time strengthening industrial value creation in Europe. Many new jobs will be created in the southern Spanish region of Campo de Gibraltar,” said Tim Meyerjürgens, CEO of TenneT Germany.
The TSO already signed long-term cooperation agreements with Spain’s Dragados Offshore and Germany’s Siemens Energy in April 2023.
BalWin3 and LanWin4 will connect to the onshore grid in Wilhelmshaven and LanWin2 near Heide.
For the projects, Siemens Energy will manufacture the main electrical components, such as switchgears, transformers, and converter technologies, at its factories in Europe, while Dragados Offshore is responsible for the construction and offshore installation of the platforms.
“With our secured project pipeline and long-term cooperation agreements, we are offering Dragados Offshore investment security in order to serve urgently needed production capacities for our increasing demand for infrastructure for offshore wind energy in Germany,” said Meyerjürgens.
