Farnborough Airport Signs SAF Deal

2025-04-01 11:50

Wedoany.com Report-Apr 1, Farnborough Airport, renowned for being Europe’s leading airport for premium air travel, recently made a groundbreaking announcement. The airport has teamed up with Hydrogen Refinery to produce 12.5 million liters or 10,000 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually. This SAF, produced locally from waste, aligns with the growing push for cleaner aviation solutions due to stricter SAF mandates.

As the first airport in the UK to offer SAF at the same price as standard Jet A1 fuel, Farnborough Airport is setting a precedent for sustainable aviation. This initiative is part of the airport’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental footprint, including its own emissions and the carbon footprint of its SAF operations.

Hydrogen Refinery’s cutting-edge technology, which processes mixed waste to generate carbon-negative SAF, is at the heart of this partnership. CEO Simon Geere highlighted the airport’s unique position in advancing sustainable technologies, leveraging its role in the aviation industry and its modern, smaller aircraft to drive this innovation forward.

The announcement comes on the heels of several notable achievements. Farnborough Airport recently earned Level 4+Carbon accreditation, becoming one of only five UK airports with this recognition. Earlier in 2024, the airport installed one of the largest solar installations in the southeast, generating 25% of its power. Additionally, in 2022, Farnborough Airport became the first airport globally to offer SAF at the same price as Jet A1, and it committed to being Net Zero by 2030.

CEO Stephen Voller of Hydrogen Refinery emphasized the importance of waste reduction, noting that their plasma electrolyser system (PES) processes mixed waste, including airline food waste, into SAF without emissions. This innovative approach not only reduces carbon emissions but also counters the growing problem of waste.

This partnership underscores Farnborough Airport’s ambition to be a global showcase for sustainability in the aviation industry, while also providing significant local economic benefits. The airport and Hydrogen Refinery are paving the way for a more sustainable future, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and reduce aviation’s environmental impact.
