2025-04-01 14:56

Wedoany.com Report-Apr 1, Galliford Try and Breheny Civil Engineering have secured significant contracts for major off-site infrastructure works for the Sizewell C nuclear power station. The road packages, including a £100m-plus scheme to build the 6.5km Sizewell Link Road and the 1.8km Two Village Bypass, were awarded to Galliford Try. Breheny Civil Engineering has been contracted to construct two roundabouts on the A12.

The Sizewell Link Road is set to complete in 2027, bypassing Theberton and Middleton Moor, linking to the existing road network through new junctions. The Two Village Bypass will route traffic around Farnham and Stratford St Andrew, with completion expected by the end of 2026. These awards follow a previous deal with Jackson Civil Engineering.

Sizewell C aims to minimize road use by delivering 60% of materials by sea or rail. A trial of hydrogen-powered buses for worker transport is also underway. Breheny Civil Engineering has a history with Sizewell, including work on Sizewell B in the 1980s and preparatory work on the new project. The company employs in-house construction teams across East Anglia, the Midlands, and Yorkshire.

Sizewell C’s site delivery director, Damian Leydon, emphasized that the new roads will help limit construction traffic and reduce disruption in Suffolk. The project, a 3.2GW twin-reactor plant on the Suffolk coast, is expected to generate 70,000 jobs and spend £4.4bn during construction. Over £2.5bn in contracts have been awarded to British firms, with a third of the workforce to be sourced locally. The project also aims to create 1,500 apprenticeships, with 60 already in place.

These deals underscore the growing role of UK construction firms in delivering large-scale projects, contributing to the UK’s economic growth and environmental sustainability.
