Wedoany.com Report-Jan 10, India has added around 24.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in 2024, reflecting more than two-fold increase in installations compared to the previous year and the highest recorded additional capacity in any previous year, according to JMK Research.
Broken down, India added about 18.5 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity in 2024, up 2.8 times from 2023. Rajasthan leads with 7.09 GW capacity, followed by Gujarat with 4.32 GW and Tamil Nadu with 1.73 GW. These states account for 71% of the total utility-scale solar installation.
For rooftop solar, India added about 4.59 GW of new rooftop solar capacity last year, up 53% from 2023. This can be attributed to the launch of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme that attracted 7 lakh installations within 10 months.
In the off-grid/distributed solar segment, about 1.48 GW was added in 2024, which is about 197% higher than the same period last year.
The country’s wind capacity also recorded a nearly 1.21 times increase in installations compared to 2023, or around 3.4 GW in capacity additions. Gujarat with 1,250 megawatts (MW), Karnataka with 1,135 MW, and Tamil Nadu with 980 MW accounted for about 98% of the capacity added in 2024.
Overall, India's renewable energy capacity surged to 209.44 GW as of December 2024. Solar power is also the most significant component of the country’s clean energy sources as it accounts for 47%.
