Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 14, Ireland’s transmission system operator, EirGrid, has announced a €1 billion ($1.1 billion) procurement program to develop an offshore electricity grid. Launched recently, the initiative supports Ireland’s strategy to expand offshore renewable energy infrastructure, starting with the east coast and later extending to the south coast.
The programme aims to facilitate the connection of offshore renewable generation to the onshore grid.
The program focuses on connecting offshore renewable energy sources to the mainland grid, enhancing the country’s clean energy capacity. It includes at least eight service categories essential for grid operations, such as inspection and maintenance, marine logistics, warehousing, subsea repair, asset monitoring, safety training, environmental support, and helicopter services. These efforts aim to ensure the grid’s reliability and efficiency.
In parallel, EirGrid has initiated another procurement effort tied to its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast Enduring Connection Policy. This project emphasizes acquiring high-voltage equipment to strengthen offshore electricity infrastructure, aligning with Ireland’s long-term renewable energy goals.
EirGrid’s chief infrastructure officer, Michael Mahon, highlighted the program’s significance, stating: “It is estimated that the procurements being launched today will be valued in excess of €1bn, which truly demonstrates the intent to begin delivering offshore renewables at scale – a critical step towards a cleaner energy future for Ireland.” He further encouraged participation, saying: “I would encourage the entire supply chain in these areas to engage with EirGrid and help us to harness the significant offshore wind resource that exists in Irish waters.”
Additionally, EirGrid has awarded four contracts to support renewable energy integration. These contracts focus on synchronous condensers, which provide low-carbon inertia to stabilize the grid as more clean energy is incorporated. The contracts were granted to Quarry Lane Stability in Sligo, Glencloosagh Energy in Kerry, Buffy Letter in Galway, and Green Frog Power in Wexford.
These initiatives reflect Ireland’s commitment to advancing its renewable energy framework. By prioritizing offshore wind and grid stability technologies, EirGrid aims to create a sustainable energy system that supports environmental goals while meeting the country’s power demands.
