Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 2, Norwegian Hydrogen has announced plans to build a new green hydrogen production facility in Rjukan, Telemark, Norway, reinforcing its commitment to expanding clean energy solutions in the Nordic region. The company confirmed the investment on April 01, 2025, marking a significant step in its growth strategy.
The Rjukan plant is expected to supply green hydrogen to customers in southern Norway and parts of Sweden.
The Rjukan plant, scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, will feature a 25MW electrolysis capacity, positioning it among the largest green hydrogen facilities in the Nordics. With potential for future expansion, the site could further enhance its output. Norwegian Hydrogen is also considering options to begin production ahead of the plant’s full operational launch.
CEO Jens Berge emphasized the project’s importance, stating: “This is an important milestone. The Rjukan facility will be important for both us and our customers, and we’re excited to get started.” The initiative is supported by a long-term power purchase agreement with Tinn Energi, ensuring a stable energy supply for hydrogen production. Additionally, a letter of intent has been signed with Nel, a hydrogen technology firm, to provide a pressurized alkaline electrolysis system, bolstered by funding from the EU Innovation Fund.
The project builds on foundations laid by Aker Horizons, which sold the Rjukan hydrogen initiative to Norwegian Hydrogen in January 2025. Aker Horizons retains the option to reinvest later, reflecting confidence in the venture’s future. The facility aims to supply clean hydrogen to industries across southern Norway and parts of Sweden, establishing Rjukan as a key hub for sustainable energy in the region.
Norwegian Hydrogen is emerging as a leader in the green hydrogen market, with operational sites in Norway and Denmark and several projects underway. The Rjukan development complements its earlier announcement in June 2023 of a 270MW green hydrogen plant in Ørskog, Norway, highlighting the company’s ambitious expansion plans. By leveraging advanced technology and strategic partnerships, Norwegian Hydrogen seeks to meet growing demand for environmentally friendly energy solutions.
