Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, The first of four main pumps for China’s ACP100 (Linglong One) small modular reactor (SMR) demonstration project has been delivered to the Changjiang construction site in Hainan Province. This follows successful factory acceptance tests. Manufactured by Hainan Nuclear Power and Harbin Electric Equipment, the shielded main pump is a single-speed, vertical, fully-sealed unit designed to meet high safety standards, ensure complete sealing, and offer a long operational lifespan.
The China Nuclear Power Research Institute (CNPRI), a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), described the pump as a vital component, stating: “The heart of the reactor coolant system … the most critical, core and most difficult to manufacture equipment.” CNPRI, responsible for setting the pump’s technical specifications, worked diligently to oversee its production, testing, and delivery to support the reactor’s construction timeline.
CNPRI highlighted the milestone’s importance: “The successful delivery of the main pump of Linglong One is not only a breakthrough in key technology, but also demonstrates China’s comprehensive strength in the design of new nuclear energy systems, high-end equipment manufacturing and coordinated management of complex projects.” The institute noted that this achievement reinforces China’s leading position in the global SMR market and enhances the reputation of its advanced small modular reactor technology.
CNNC launched the ACP100 SMR project in July 2019 at the Changjiang site, which already hosts two operational CNP600 pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The 125 MWe ACP100, a multi-purpose PWR, is designed for electricity generation, urban heating and cooling, industrial steam production, or seawater desalination. Its development began in 2010, with the preliminary integrated design finalized in 2014. In 2016, it became the first SMR to pass a safety review by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Construction of the ACP100 started with the pouring of first concrete in July 2021, targeting completion within 58 months. Equipment installation commenced in December 2022, the reactor building’s main internal structure was finished in March 2023, and the outer containment dome was installed in February this year. The site is also seeing progress on two Hualong One units, begun in March and December 2021, expected to enter commercial operation by the end of 2026.
Upon completion, the ACP100 will generate 1 terawatt-hour of electricity annually, sufficient to power 526,000 households. This versatile reactor supports diverse applications, contributing to sustainable energy solutions in Hainan Province and beyond.
