Italy's Hydrogen Train
Wedoany.com Report-Feb 18, Italy unveiled its first hydrogen-powered train on the morning of Thursday, February 13, 2025, at a new maintenance and refueling plant in Rovato, Brescia. This event marks a crucial development in the H2iseO project, aimed at creating the first Italian Hydrogen Valley in Valcamonica. The initiative involves developing an economic and industrial supply chain focused on decarbonizing heavy transpo
The train's arrival from Alstom’s test circuit in Salzgitter, Germany, was made possible thanks to the pioneering efforts of Sapio, a company based in Monza since 1922, which supplied the hydrogen and the mobile refueling station. Sapio has been a long-standing proponent of hydrogen as a key element of the energy transition, reinforcing its role in supporting infrastructure and technology necessary for a greener future.
Alessandro Corbetta, a leader from the Lega in the Lombardy Region, highlighted the region's commitment to innovation and modernization of transport and infrastructure. He praised Lombardy's proactive approach as the first in Europe to embark on such a path, showcasing true and concrete environmental sustainability. This project aligns with the European Union’s Next Generation EU program, funded through the IPCEI Hydrogen 1 funding program, which underscores the region's leadership in green hydrogen and renewable energies.
The introduction of these trains is part of a broader effort to replace older diesel models, offering a cleaner alternative that does not compromise on infrastructure. The hydrogen-powered trains, designed and produced by Alstom in Italy, are equipped with high-performance lithium-ion batteries and innovative energy management systems, ensuring a seamless blend of sustainability and technological advancement.
Fulvio Caradonna from Ferrovienord Milano assured the public of the safety and sustainability of the hydrogen trains during their refueling at the new Rovato station. He addressed concerns and emphasized the ecological benefits of hydrogen, which produces only water vapor and oxygen emissions when burned.
Alberto Dossi, president of Sapio, during the event, described hydrogen as "an extraordinary energy vector." He stressed the importance of public-private collaborations and government incentives to make hydrogen economically viable. Dossi’s remarks reflect a strong commitment to advancing hydrogen technologies and their critical role in Italy's energy transition.
