The Blyth Battery, now operational, boasts a capacity of 238.5 megawatts (MW) and 477 megawatt-hours (MWh), making it the largest of its kind in the state.
The company highlighted the project’s role in supporting both the local grid and a significant renewable energy agreement. Neoen stated: “Blyth Battery will not only contribute to the grid but also support Neoen’s first-ever renewable energy baseload contract, helping firm wind power from our Goyder South Stage 1 wind farm to power operations at BHP’s Olympic Dam – also located in South Australia.” This contract ensures stable energy supply for BHP’s operations, utilizing wind power from Neoen’s Goyder South Stage 1 wind farm.
Together with Neoen’s Hornsdale Power Reserve, which has a capacity of 150 MW and 193.5 MWh, the Blyth Battery enables the company to provide nearly half of South Australia’s energy storage capacity. This combined contribution enhances the state’s ability to store and distribute renewable energy efficiently, supporting a more reliable power network.
The Blyth Battery’s design focuses on optimizing energy flow, capturing excess renewable energy during periods of high production and releasing it when demand rises.
