Sumasna, Regional Secretary of West Java Province; Ai Saadiyah Dwidaningsih, Head of West Java Environmental Management Agency
The Group is working with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of National Development Planning, and PT Pertamina, a state-owned energy company. The summit, organized by the Indonesia Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association, brought together key figures, including the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, officials from the Ministry of National Development Planning, Pertamina executives, and Hyundai Motor Group representatives. At the event, the Ministry of Energy presented Indonesia’s national hydrogen roadmap, while the Ministry of National Development Planning shared hydrogen policies for Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital.
The initiative includes building an on-site hydrogen refueling station using Pertamina’s existing compressed natural gas infrastructure, with operations planned to start by 2027. The station will use low-carbon hydrogen produced from biogas extracted at the Sarimukti landfill near Bandung, West Java’s capital. Following a technical feasibility study, construction at the Sarimukti landfill is set to begin this year. Hyundai Motor Group is partnering with Korean organizations to integrate advanced hydrogen technologies into the project.
The Sarimukti landfill processes about 80 percent of Bandung’s daily 1,500 tons of waste. The area has faced challenges from natural disasters, such as fires, floods, and landslides, worsened by climate change. Hyundai Motor Group, in collaboration with Good Neighbors, is supporting local communities by improving access to clean water and healthcare. The Group is also working with Sejin G&E to secure the landfill, reducing disaster risks and enabling biogas extraction for hydrogen production through Hyundai Rotem’s steam methane reformer.
Hyundai Motor Group’s senior management emphasized: “The roadmap underscores significant advancements in the Group’s commitment to sustainable hydrogen solutions.” The project aligns with Indonesia’s National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap and supports the goals of the country’s central government.
The partnership with Pertamina facilitates a complete hydrogen ecosystem, covering land for refueling stations, hydrogen production, transportation, and vehicle use. With backing from Indonesian authorities, the initiative addresses waste management needs while promoting low-carbon hydrogen production, contributing to sustainable development in the region.
This effort marks Hyundai Motor Group’s first overseas milestone in its waste-to-hydrogen strategy, showcasing a model for integrating environmental responsibility with innovative energy solutions in Indonesia.
