Wedoany.com Report-Mar 31, On March 1 to 15, Brazil’s center-south region experienced a significant drop in sugar cane crushing, with production decreasing by nearly 18% to 1.83 million tonnes compared to the same period last year. Ethanol production also declined by 19%, reaching 442 million litres during the same timeframe.
Sugar production in the region was down by 19%, hitting a record low of 52,000 tonnes. However, ethanol production saw a slight increase, rising by approximately 20%.
Nineteen sugar processing units began operations for the 2025/26 harvest early in March, with the official start of the harvest set for April in the region. By the end of the two-week period, 37 production units were operating, with 22 processing sugarcane, 10 producing ethanol from corn, and five operating flex plants.
Unica’s sector intelligence director, Luciano Rodrigues, noted that at least 19 other production units were expected to restart operations in the second half of March, but the schedule could change depending on weather conditions and operational challenges in each sugarcane region.
