Wedoany.com Report-Feb 24, The Spanish government has approved €236 million in subsidies for two green hydrogen projects in Catalonia, part of a €1.214 billion aid package. The projects, located in Tarragona's Ascó and La Pobla de Mafumet, are among 16 selected by the Spanish government to support renewable hydrogen production. These initiatives are part of the EU's Next Generation funds and aim to promote decarbonization in key sectors.
The projects, which total €1.214 billion in funding, will generate 4 GW of green hydrogen capacity, representing 33% of Spain's target under the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). Approximately 9,000 direct jobs and 11,000 indirect jobs are expected to be created as a result of these investments.
One of the projects, HyBERUS, will have an electrolysis capacity of 360 MWe, while the other, Tarragona Hydrogen Network (T-HYNET), will have a capacity of 132.5 MWe. The State will contribute more than €137 million to the first project and €314 million to the second. These investments will help Spain achieve its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.
The government emphasized that green hydrogen is a key component of Spain's renewable energy strategy. The projects will generate ecosystems that will remain beneficial for the region, as hydrogen production is expected to remain relevant in the decarbonization process.
