Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 14, Corio Generation has decided to halt the development of its 450MW Sceirde Rocks project off the west coast of Ireland. The company made this decision after recent investigations revealed that the site, located off County Galway, presents more challenges than initially expected.
The site investigations suggest that the project area, which already has a tough rocky seabed, is also subject to severe waves and currents. Sources informed reNEWS that while many of these challenges were anticipated, the Sceirde Rocks project was considered one of the more difficult Phase 1 offshore wind schemes.
Corio had been exploring the use of gravity base foundations, similar to those deployed at the Fécamp offshore wind project in France, to make the Sceirde Rocks development feasible. The company also holds an ORESS 1 contract for the project.
A spokesperson from Corio declined to provide further comment. However, the company is currently in discussions with the UK Department for Energy, Climate, and Communications (DECC) to determine the next steps.
In addition to halting the Sceirde Rocks project, Corio has started a significant restructuring effort. This comes after its parent company, Macquarie, was unable to find a buyer for the business. Corio stated, "Given challenging market conditions in the offshore wind sector, Corio Generation is refocusing its global operations to prioritize the development of a smaller portfolio of projects with the clearest path to construction."
This strategic shift highlights the ongoing difficulties in the offshore wind sector and Corio's effort to adapt to the current market challenges.
