Tata Power to Install 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System in Mumbai

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, Tata Power Company has secured approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to establish a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai. The project, set to be completed within two years, incorporates advanced “black start” technology, enabling rapid restoration of electricity to essential facilities like the metro, hospitals, the airport, and data centers during grid disruptions. This feature aims to prevent widespread outages and bolster the resilience of Mumbai’s power network.

The BESS features state-of-the-art technology designed to enhance reactive power management, improving efficiency during peak demand and fortifying the city’s energy infrastructure. With its high ramp-rate capability, the system will ensure effective peak load management, maintaining a consistent power supply even during periods of heightened usage. It will also store energy during low-cost periods for use during expensive peak hours, reducing power purchase expenses and potentially lowering consumer tariffs over time.

Additionally, the system will delay the need for significant capital investments in infrastructure upgrades by managing load variations with stored energy. Beyond grid reliability, the BESS will provide supplementary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support, contributing to overall network stability. It will also improve solar energy use by storing excess daytime power for release during peak times, promoting greater integration of renewable energy and increasing green energy consumption in Mumbai. The deployment will further meet energy storage requirements set for the region.

The 100 MW system will be distributed across 10 carefully selected sites near key demand areas in Mumbai’s distribution network. These installations will be overseen and managed centrally from Tata Power’s Power System Control Center (PSCC), ensuring seamless operation and coordination.

This initiative reflects Tata Power’s commitment to enhancing Mumbai’s energy framework with innovative solutions. By addressing grid stability, cost efficiency, and renewable energy utilization, the BESS is poised to support the city’s growing power needs while advancing sustainable energy practices.
