KenGen Undertaking Geothermal Exploration in Eswatini

Wedoany.com Report-Nov 9, Kenya-based power producer KenGen is currently in the final stages of detailed geoscientific surveys for geothermal exploration in Eswatini. A feasibility study is expected to be finalized by Deceber 2024 which will determine plans for a drilling phase.

The involvement of KenGen in geothermal exploration in Eswatini started earlier this year with a partnership signed with the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC). The project was set to focus on three key areas identified by an earlier reconnaissance survey – Mvusthini in the Lobamba area, Mkhoba near Piggs Peak, and the Lubombo Plateau around Magadzavane.

“Our aim is to generate base load power using renewable energy, ensuring a cleaner and more reliable electricity supply for the nation. This project aligns with EEC’s commitment to sustainability and energy security,” said EEC Managing Director Ernest Mkhonta during the launch of the project back in September 2024.

“We are exploring in Eswatini to confirm geothermal potential, and all indications suggest it is feasible,” noted Peter Njenga, Managing Director of KenGen.

The leading Kenyan geothermal developer and operator has been offering exploration and drilling services for geothermal development in other African countries as part of the company’s revenue diversification scheme. KenGen currently has drilling contracts in Ethiopia and Djibouti, and is expediting a similar project in Tanzania.
