Al-Sudani’s remarks took place during his visit to the southeastern Iraqi province of Maysan to launch the Maysan refinery development project, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

It is expected that the Maysan refinery’s development would increase its daily capacity from 40,000 barrels to 110,000 barrels, according to Al-Sudani.

The expansion of the Maysan refinery, one of the major projects in Iraq’s oil industry that has been delayed since 2014, will be finished in a time frame of six to eight months.

According to Al-Sudani, the expansion project of the Baiji refinery, which will increase Iraq’s refining capacity by 70,000 barrels per day, will be completed in two months. This will bring the total capacity of all Iraqi refineries to 542,000 barrels per day.

Iraq, OPEC’s second-largest producer of crude oil, is expanding its oil refining capacity to fulfill domestic demand and lessen dependency on imports despite significant political and economic challenges in the region.
