Earba Pumped Storage Project Gets Planning Consent in Scotland

2025-04-01 11:58

Wedoany.com Report-Apr 1, The Earba Storage Project, a proposed pumped storage hydro (PSH) scheme with a capacity of 1800MW and 40,000MWh storage, has been officially approved by the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit. This approval marks the UK’s largest PSH project to date.

The project, led by Gilkes Energy, aims to store energy from renewable sources, particularly wind, and release it during peak demand to stabilize the grid. Designed for 22 hours of storage at full capacity, it aligns with the UK’s transition to net-zero emissions.

The planning application, a Section 36 type, involved extensive surveys, analysis, and consultations, culminating in an Environmental Impact Assessment report. This initiative highlights the role of large-scale energy storage in integrating renewables into the grid and reducing reliance on gas.

Gilkes Energy emphasizes the project’s benefits, including supporting decarbonization, enhancing energy security, and lowering consumer costs. The company is also working on the LDES Cap & Floor mechanism to attract private investment in pumped storage projects, with plans for interconnectors already underway.

With planning approval secured, Gilkes Energy will focus on finalizing the project design, securing investment, and preparing for construction. Further updates can be found on their website.

Additionally, a 1.8GW PSH project named Fearna, a joint venture between SSE Renewables and Gilkes Energy, has submitted its planning application. Located near Invergarry, it aims to provide 36,000 MWh of energy storage, utilizing existing infrastructure for efficiency. This project underscores Scotland’s commitment to renewable energy integration and grid stability.
