Linde to Install Thermochemical Regenerator Technology at O-I Glass Plant in Holzminden, Germany

Wedoany.com Report-Mar 31, O-I Glass, Inc. and Linde plc have announced a collaborative project to implement Linde’s OPTIMELT Thermochemical Regenerator (TCR) technology at O-I’s container glass plant in Holzminden, Germany. This partnership is expected to significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and lower Scope 1 CO2 emissions by approximately 30% compared to traditional furnaces.

Linde’s OPTIMELT TCR technology captures waste heat from glass furnace flue gas to preheat and reform natural gas, cutting fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The technology is also adaptable to alternative fuels like low-carbon hydrogen or a blend of hydrogen and natural gas. Globally, Linde is applying this innovative solution to enhance energy efficiency across various industries, including the U.S.

Dr. Amitabh Gupta, Vice President of Technology at Linde, emphasized the company’s 30+ years of expertise in providing oxygen and burner technology to the glass industry. “Our track record includes supporting O-I, and we are excited to help them decarbonize with this cost-effective solution.”

Randy Burns, Chief Administrative & Sustainability Officer of O-I, added, “By strategically deploying advanced technologies, we align with our broader sustainability goals and support our customers in their decarbonization efforts.”

Additionally, O-I has commissioned Linde to install an advanced Centrifugal VITRON Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) plant in Holzminden. This plant will produce oxygen for the furnace and align with Linde’s ECOVAR small on-site portfolio, offering enhanced power efficiency, reduced noise emissions, and a smaller environmental footprint.

This collaboration underscores the potential of innovative technologies to drive meaningful environmental and industrial progress.
