Gilkes Energy Gains Planning Consent for Earba Storage Project in Scotland

2025-04-02 09:24

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 2, Gilkes Energy recently secured Section 36 planning consent for the Earba storage project, a pumped storage hydro (PSH) initiative at Loch Earba in Scotland. With a capacity of 1.8GW and 40 GWh storage, it’s set to become the UK’s largest PSH project. The initiative also includes plans for large-scale peatland and woodland restoration to boost biodiversity. Strategically located in the Scottish Highlands, the project benefits from favorable geological and topographical conditions, including short tunnels and high head, making it highly economically viable.

The project is capable of delivering 22 hours of storage at full power.

The project aims to transform into a fully operational operation, focusing on securing capital for financial viability. Construction is expected to create 500 jobs over six to seven years. Earba PSH project director David Tomb emphasized the project's significance, noting it surpasses 400 typical lithium-ion battery storage systems in scale. Long-term energy storage benefits include minimizing wind curtailment payments and reducing reliance on gas, lowering emissions and enhancing grid efficiency.

Gilkes Energy is collaborating with the UK government and Ofgem to implement the LDES Cap & Floor mechanism in 2025, aiming to attract private investment. Tomb highlighted the importance of working closely with suppliers to develop the necessary supply chain capacity. Additionally, in July 2024, SSE Renewables joined forces with Gilkes Energy to advance the Loch Fearna PSH project.

In summary, the Earba storage project marks a significant milestone in the UK’s renewable energy landscape, offering economic opportunities and environmental benefits.
