Amprion Bags Permit for 2GW North-South Grid Link

2025-04-16 14:14

Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 16, The German Federal Network Agency has issued a permit to Amprion for the construction of the 300km A-Nord underground cable route, enabling the transmission of 2GW of wind energy from northern to southern Germany. This approval marks a significant step in enhancing the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.

“With this final approval, we can now build anywhere along the route,” said Matthias Gierlich, Amprion’s project manager for A-Nord.

The A-Nord project is divided into six sections for planning and approval purposes. The Federal Network Agency has now cleared all sections, allowing Amprion to proceed with construction across the entire route. Work has already started in the areas of Nordhorn and Bad Bentheim, with further progress expected.

“The planning center in Nordhorn will serve as the central coordination point for the construction work,” Amprion stated, highlighting the strategic role of this hub in managing the project’s development.

The A-Nord cable route is designed to collect wind power generated in the North Sea region near Emden and deliver it to Meerbusch-Osterath, close to Düsseldorf. This infrastructure will support the efficient distribution of renewable energy, addressing growing energy demands in southern Germany.

One specific section, NDS3, spans approximately 30 kilometers, stretching from the municipal border between Wietmarschen and Nordhorn to the state border between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. This segment is part of the broader effort to integrate wind energy into Germany’s national grid.

Amprion’s progress on the A-Nord route underscores Germany’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy capacity. By facilitating the transport of wind power across regions, the project contributes to a more sustainable and reliable energy system for the country.
