Toshiba and Nimbus to Develop Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Fuel Cells

2024-11-25 10:01

Wedoany.com Report-Nov 25, Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions Corporation will jointly develop new hydrogen fuel cell stacks with Nimbus Power Systems.

Under a joint development agreement, Nimbus will combine its “four-fluid stack technology” with Toshiba’s “fuel cell commercialisation and mass production technology.”

H2 View understands that once commercially available, the fuel cells will be suitable for buses and trucks, along with stationary operations.

Nimbus’ technology combines porous and metal separators to supply four fluids – hydrogen, air, pure water and antifreeze – to enable “stable and efficient operation at high output.”

“Nimbus’ innovative fuel cell technology arises from the needs of the heavy-duty mobility market, focusing on decarbonising critical sectors of the global economy and providing zero-emission solutions to our customers,” explained Michael Gorman, President and Co-Founder of Nimbus.

Shigehiro Kawahara, Vice President of the Energy Aggregation Division at Toshiba, claimed the partnership with Nimbus aligns with the Japanese firm’s mission.

“We will focus on the early commercialisation of competitive fuel cell stacks applicable to various uses,” Kawahara added.

Last month, Toshiba announced a collaboration with Airbus UpNext on superconductivity research for hydrogen-powered aviation, underscoring its dedication to advancing its role in the hydrogen sector.
