Transfer of Halden Licence Completed

2025-04-01 10:59

Wedoany.com Report-Apr 1, The Norwegian government has recently transferred the license for operating the Halden nuclear reactor and associated facilities to the Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND), succeeding the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE). This move marks a significant milestone in the management of Norway’s historic nuclear research infrastructure. The approval by the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority came earlier this month, with the government now granting the indefinite extension of the license, subject to potential revocation.

The Halden reactor, which began operation in 1959, was operational until 2020, with a maximum power output of 25 MWt. It served as a versatile test reactor for nuclear technology, undergoing multiple testing positions to provide flexible conditions for research. After IFE announced plans to terminate its lease in 2018, the reactor, which had suffered a safety valve failure, was shut down and not restarted. NND has taken on the responsibility for decommissioning and managing the reactor, ensuring the safety and integrity of its facilities.

NND and IFE have committed to independent safety assessments for their respective facilities. The transfer of responsibility signifies Norway’s ongoing efforts to advance its nuclear capabilities responsibly, with a focus on maintaining safety and ensuring the smooth transition of nuclear assets. The new arrangement will facilitate future decommissioning tasks in other locations, such as Lillestrøm and Aurskog-Høland, supporting Norway’s long-term nuclear research and development goals.

This decision reflects the government’s commitment to the peaceful utilization of nuclear energy while preserving the country’s historical nuclear infrastructure for future generations.
