Donau Chemie Begins Transporting Salt by Rail Using New TALNS Wagons From ÖBB Rail Cargo Group

Wedoany.com Report-Nov 27, The first wagons were delivered to Donau Chemie's plant in Brückl, Carinthia, earlier this year and are now operational.

Donau Chemie has started using newly developed TALNS wagons from ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) to transport salt by rail, moving shipments previously carried by road.

Transporting salt presents unique challenges due to its corrosive nature, which can damage wagon materials. The new TALNS wagons are designed to withstand these conditions, featuring durable coatings to extend their lifespan. They also offer semi-automatic unloading using pneumatics, reducing the workload for employees and enhancing safety.

By shifting salt transport from road to rail, Donau Chemie is reducing CO2 emissions and decreasing the number of trucks on the road. A single train can carry approximately 1,100 tonnes of salt, equivalent to the load of 44 trucks. The salt is transported from Koper in Slovenia and Ebensee in Upper Austria to the Brückl plant, where it is used in electrolysis processes.

The collaboration between Donau Chemie and RCG has been ongoing for over ten years and has now been extended for another decade. This partnership aims to provide efficient and sustainable logistics solutions, utilizing customized transport equipment suited to the specific needs of salt transportation.
