Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 16, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), delivered the CMA CGM SEINE, a 24,000-TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel container ship, to France’s CMA CGM Group in Shanghai. This milestone marks the completion of the world’s first ultra-large dual-fuel container ship, equipped with a power system that can operate on either LNG or oil.

The CMA CGM SEINE, measuring 399 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, has the capacity to carry 220,000 tonnes of cargo. It can accommodate up to 23,876 TEU containers, including 2,200 refrigerated units. This vessel is the first of four ordered by CMA CGM Group, a major global container shipping company.

With an 18,600-cubic-meter fuel bunker fully loaded with LNG, the ship can travel nearly 20,000 nautical miles. Compared to oil-powered vessels of similar size, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 85 percent, supporting more sustainable shipping operations.

A representative from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding stated: “The delivery of the CMA CGM SEINE showcases our advanced shipbuilding capabilities and commitment to supporting environmentally friendly shipping solutions.” The vessel is set to begin operations on a Far East-Europe route on April 18.

To date, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has delivered 17 container ships to CMA CGM Group, including 12 dual-fuel vessels. The CMA CGM SEINE strengthens this partnership, combining cutting-edge technology with improved environmental performance.

The construction of this ultra-large dual-fuel ship highlights the industry’s emphasis on sustainability and efficiency. By incorporating a flexible fuel system and achieving significant emission reductions, the vessel supports the global shipping sector’s shift toward cleaner technologies while meeting the needs of international trade routes.

This delivery reinforces the collaboration between CSSC’s subsidiary and CMA CGM Group, positioning Shanghai as a key center for innovative shipbuilding. The CMA CGM SEINE is well-equipped to contribute to efficient and eco-conscious maritime transport on a vital global shipping corridor.
