Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 14, RWE initiated construction of a new solar plant at the Hambach opencast mine in Germany. Located in the Düren district near Niederzier, North Rhine-Westphalia, this project expands RWE’s renewable energy presence in the region. The company already operates two solar facilities at the same site, and the new plant will increase the total capacity to over 60 megawatts.
The photovoltaic facility will cover 12 hectares on the western edge of the mine, near the future Hambach Lake shoreline. It will feature 22,000 solar modules and is expected to generate 13.9 megawatts of power. Once operational in September 2025, it will supply green electricity to approximately 4,500 households. The project aligns with regional efforts to transition to sustainable energy sources.
Niederzier’s mayor, Frank Rombey, emphasized the project’s significance: “For the municipality of Niederzier, the expansion of renewables is one of the pillars of structural change.” He highlighted the importance of investing in the area’s economic future as mining activities phase out.
RWE’s chief executive for Renewables Europe & Australia, Katja Wünschel, also spoke on the project: “The start of construction for our new solar plant near Niederzier shows that the expansion of renewables in the Rhenish mining area is making good progress.” She underscored the value of community involvement, noting efforts to collaborate with nearby municipalities.
The new plant complements two existing solar facilities at the Hambach mine, which together produce 47.2 megawatts and power around 14,500 homes. One of these includes battery storage for enhanced efficiency. RWE manages these plants in partnership with Neuland Hambach, a group representing six local municipalities: Elsdorf, Jülich, Kerpen, Merzenich, Niederzier, and Titz. These communities can opt to invest in the new Niederzier plant after its completion.
Andreas Heller, mayor of Elsdorf and chair of Neuland Hambach’s supervisory board, commented: “Another 14MW will be added to 47.2MW of solar capacity that we are already operating in the RWE Neuland Solar Farm at the Hambach opencast mine.” He affirmed their intent to take a stake in the new facility, aiming to ensure long-term economic benefits through renewable energy projects.
The Niederzier project reflects a shared commitment to sustainable development, fostering collaboration between RWE and local communities. By repurposing mining land for clean energy, the initiative supports the region’s transition to a greener future while maintaining economic stability.
