Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, Global Power Generation (GPG) Naturgy Group launched Western Australia’s first major hybrid solar and energy storage initiative on April 06, 2025, known as the Cunderdin project. This facility integrates 229,500 solar panels, delivering a photovoltaic capacity of 128MW, alongside a battery energy storage system (BESS) rated at 55MW / 220MWh. Designed to ensure a consistent four-hour power supply during periods without sunlight, the project marks a significant step in sustainable energy development.
Located in Western Australia, the Cunderdin facility generates enough electricity to meet the yearly needs of 51,000 households. It also contributes to environmental efforts by reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 140,000 tonnes annually. The project, which required a €172m investment, created job opportunities equivalent to 100 full-time positions during its construction phase.
This week, GPG hosted an inauguration event in Western Australia to celebrate the completion of this pioneering effort. The Cunderdin project stands as the company’s first large-scale venture combining solar power generation with battery storage on a global scale. The ceremony highlighted the facility’s role in advancing renewable energy solutions.
Western Power chief executive Sam Barbaro attended the event and praised the achievement. He stated: “The energisation of the Cunderdin hybrid solar PV and energy storage project represents another milestone on WA’s net-zero journey.” He emphasized the successful teamwork between Western Power, GPG, and various contractors, noting their collaboration and innovative approach. Barbaro added: “Projects like this are important as we move towards a renewable future.”
The Cunderdin project strengthens Western Australia’s energy infrastructure by integrating solar power with advanced storage technology. It supports the region’s growing demand for clean energy while maintaining a stable supply. The facility’s approval for commercial operation underscores its readiness to contribute to both local consumption and broader sustainability goals.
