Wedoany.com Report-Nov 11, Swiss Steel Group has introduced its lead-free machinable steel, 11SMn30+BX. 11SMn30+BX is a sustainable, high-quality alternative to traditional leaded machinable steels. Using boron (B) instead of lead as an alloying element, this innovative solution maintains exceptional workability while aligning with future regulatory standards.
The addition of boron to free-cutting steel improves machinability if the metallurgical processes in the steelworks are properly controlled, the company said. Complex inclusions are formed that contain both Boron oxides and Boron nitrides, which have a lubricating effect.
Specifically designed for applications requiring small, high-precision components, 11SMn30+BX’s superior machinability supports smooth, reliable manufacturing processes.
Lead has conventionally offered a number of benefits for machineable steel, including its function as a natural lubricant; its promotion of the formation of small, discontinuous chips, which are easier to remove from the work area; and heat dissapation.
Lead is, however, a hazardous material. The European ELV (End-of-Life Vehicles) Directive allows lead as an alloying element in steel for machining purposes with a lead content of up to 0.35% by weight. Anticipating potential EU regulations to restrict lead use further, 11SMn30+BX stands as a high-performing, eco-conscious, and future-proof option.
Its precision and dimensional stability make it suited for producing components where machinability and durability are critical. Swiss Steel Group’s rigorous control over the entire production process—from raw material sourcing to final processing—ensures a consistent quality that reduces equipment wear and downtime. This translates directly into improved operational efficiency and competitive advantages for clients, the company said.
Applications include:
Automotive: Ideal for precision small parts requiring excellent machinability
Machinery: Delivers reliable quality and durability for robust components
Hydraulics: Perfect for intricate applications demanding precision and surface quality
