Wedoany.com Report-Feb 19, H2 MOBILITY, a leading provider of hydrogen refuelling stations, is adapting to the evolving market for trucks and buses. The company plans to close 11 small 700-bar hydrogen refuelling stations in Germany by March 31, 2025, with an additional 11 closures by the end of the second quarter. These closures are part of a network consolidation that began in 2022.
The stations in Neuruppin, Bonn, Flensburg, Geisingen, Potsdam, Ulm, Siegen, Aachen, Bad Rappenau, Heidelberg (Speyerer Straße), and Mönchengladbach will be shut down. Martin Jüngel, Managing Director & CFO of H2 MOBILITY, stated: “As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, the hydrogen mobility market in Germany has undergone significant changes. Our strategic focus has shifted to expanding hydrogen infrastructure for light and heavy commercial vehicles based on regional demand. Older stations designed for passenger cars, some over 10 years old, no longer meet today’s standards and will be removed.”
H2 MOBILITY is investing in a new generation of hydrogen refuelling stations tailored for buses and commercial vehicles. These stations require higher roofs, larger aprons for trucks, and the ability to store and refuel larger quantities of hydrogen. The company is focusing on regional hydrogen hubs in high-demand areas like urban centers and major transport routes.
In the next six months, two new stations with 350-, 500-, and 700-bar refuelling facilities will open in Düsseldorf and Ludwigshafen. In 2024, large stations already opened in Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Frankenthal in the Rhine-Neckar region. The new stations feature more pumps, larger hydrogen supplies via trailers, and advanced technology developed by H2 MOBILITY.
This transformation is driven by the slower market growth for passenger cars and small commercial vehicles. Jüngel explained: “The demand for 350-bar refuelling for buses and commercial vehicles is continuously rising. By the end of the year, we expect most of our sales to come from 350-bar demand. By targeting demand, we are creating an economically viable infrastructure that supports the transport transition.”
