Network Rail Trials Pioneering Drone System to Improve Safety and Efficiency Across UK Railways

2025-04-01 11:40

Wedoany.com Report-Apr 1, The UK’s railway network is taking a significant leap forward with the launch of the first drone-assured navigation and safety system by Network Rail. This innovative solution is designed to revolutionise safety, efficiency, and maintenance across its 20,000-mile track network.

The system, tested on the Wolverhampton and Severn Valley Railway lines, has already shown promising results. By operating beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS), drones can swiftly detect and address trespassers, reducing delays and enhancing safety. Last year alone, there were over 18,500 reported incidents of trespass, and this system has proven to act as a faster, more effective response.

A standout feature of the project is the Digital Tethering™ technology, which ensures safe and precise drone navigation. By combining artificial perception with accurate ground-based beacons, this system operates within a defined safety corridor. Even in challenging areas with unreliable GPS signals, such as remote or dense railway zones, the drones provide real-time tracking of their positions. This cutting-edge technology guarantees safe autonomous operation, minimizing risks to ground personnel.

The benefits of this system are substantial. It is expected to significantly reduce £55 million annually in performance delays caused by trespass and vandalism. Additionally, it will help cut £1.9 billion annually in costs related to monitoring issues like animal incidents, fallen trees, and power line fires. By improving the speed and accuracy of monitoring, Network Rail can allocate resources more effectively, creating a safer working environment for staff and passengers alike.

Dominic Mottram, Programme Manager for National Drone Strategy at Network Rail, highlighted the potential of this initiative: “The impact of these projects could be huge, transforming the UK railway network into a safer, faster, and more efficient service for everyone.”

Robert Garbett, Founder and CEO of Drone Major Limited, praised the initiative: “As a ‘first mover,’ Network Rail’s trial of our Digital Tethering™ concept sets an example worldwide, modernising rail infrastructure for a safer, faster, and more efficient future.”

This groundbreaking project marks the beginning of a fully operational drone network, poised to revolutionise the future of railway monitoring and maintenance across the UK.
