Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, Construction has started on SSE Renewables’ inaugural onshore wind farm project in Italy, marking a significant step for the company in the region. The Puglia project, with a capacity of 17.3MW, is being developed across two locations in southern Italy’s Puglia region: Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva. The wind farm will feature five Siemens Gamesa 132-3.4MW turbines, designed to harness renewable energy efficiently.
Initial efforts focus on laying foundations and preparing site access through enabling works. Once these preparations are complete, the installation of the turbines will commence at both sites. Italian company Idoka Construzioni serves as the main contractor, overseeing a project expected to create approximately 70 jobs during its peak construction phase.
Gianluca Mercurio, SSE Renewables’ country manager, expressed enthusiasm about the milestone: “It’s fantastic to have construction underway on our Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farm sites in Puglia, our first project in Italy. We will be working closely with our contractors and supply chain partners as we look to complete construction of this strategic project.” He emphasized the collaborative approach with local stakeholders to ensure smooth progress.
The Puglia wind farm is set to contribute to Italy’s renewable energy goals, supporting both the nation and the Puglia region in meeting climate targets. Mercurio added: “The wind farm will play a part in helping Italy and the Puglia region reach climate targets, helping to strengthen energy security and generating homegrown renewable energy.” This underscores the project’s role in enhancing local energy independence through sustainable means.
The development reflects a careful balance of construction timelines and regional benefits. Early groundwork paves the way for turbine installation, while the involvement of an Italian contractor highlights local economic contributions. Upon completion, the wind farm will produce clean energy, aligning with broader efforts to increase renewable capacity in Italy without relying on imports or affecting consumption patterns elsewhere.
This initiative by SSE Renewables demonstrates a commitment to expanding its footprint in Italy’s renewable sector. The Puglia project, though modest in scale, sets a foundation for future endeavors, blending technical precision with environmental objectives. As construction progresses, the sites at Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva are poised to become key contributors to the region’s energy landscape, delivering power generated from natural resources within Italy’s borders.
