Wedoany.com Report-Jan 2, With AI technology integrated into wagon inspection processes, DB Cargo aims to optimize workflows and operational efficiency in rail freight transport.
DB Cargo is implementing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to improve the efficiency of freight wagon inspections across eight major marshalling yards in Germany. Over 10,000 freight wagons pass through these facilities daily, where AI is being used to assess their condition and collect key operational data in real-time.
The technology integrates with existing camera bridges equipped with high-speed cameras and lighting systems. These camera bridges, already in operation at eight locations, allow AI to inspect wagons for potential damage as they pass through. Currently, DB Cargo operates 13 such camera bridges across Germany.
In addition to identifying physical damage, the latest advancement enables AI to analyze essential wagon markings, including weight, brake specifications, and loading dimensions. Previously, such checks often required manual inspection, consuming significant time and resources. The automated data analysis supports operational workflows and helps expedite processing.
The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport under the "Future Rail Freight Transport" program. It is also part of the DB CargoLab initiative, focusing on digitalization and automation projects aimed at refining rail freight operations.
