Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 14, Belgian technology firm John Cockerill and Vietnam’s Viettel Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore long-term collaboration on developing a manufacturing and supply chain base in Vietnam for pressurized alkaline water electrolyzers, essential for green hydrogen production. The agreement, announced recently, focuses on supporting Vietnam’s energy transition and fostering sustainable energy solutions.
The partnership aims to assess the potential for establishing a manufacturing facility in Vietnam to produce components or complete units of alkaline water electrolyzers. These systems would serve Vietnam’s domestic market while also enabling exports to international markets, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. The initiative seeks to strengthen the supply chain for green hydrogen, a key resource for clean energy.
Beyond hydrogen production, John Cockerill and Viettel Group plan to explore opportunities in other energy transition technologies, including cooling towers, molten salts, and nuclear energy solutions. These efforts aim to support Vietnam’s domestic energy needs and create export opportunities, contributing to global sustainability goals.
A John Cockerill representative stated: “This collaboration aims to investigate the feasibility of developing a manufacturing facility and supply chain in Vietnam for all or part of the alkaline water electrolyzer equipment used to produce green hydrogen.” The partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to advancing Vietnam’s clean energy objectives while fostering innovation in the energy sector.
In a related development, John Cockerill was selected in late 2024 as a strategic partner by ETFuels, a green energy company, for a 120,000-ton-per-year e-methanol project in Texas, U.S. For this initiative, John Cockerill will supply 210 megawatts of pressurized alkaline electrolyzer units and provide technical support during the front-end engineering and design phase of the green hydrogen facility. The project also involves Johnson Matthey, which will contribute its eMERALD e-methanol technology and methanol synthesis catalyst.
The collaboration between John Cockerill and Viettel Group marks a significant step toward building a robust green energy infrastructure in Vietnam. By focusing on advanced technologies like green hydrogen and exploring diverse energy solutions, the partnership supports the country’s ambition to transition to cleaner energy sources. It also positions Vietnam as a potential hub for sustainable energy production, with benefits for both local and international markets.
