Wedoany.com Report-Dec 19, The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce and the Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic to support the construction of the Suusamyr-Kokomeren hydropower plant (HPP) cascade.
The project, located on the Kokomeren River, aims to expand Kyrgyzstan’s energy capacity by leveraging the country’s hydropower resources. The planned cascade of three hydropower plants is projected to generate a combined capacity of 1,305 megawatts, addressing the country’s growing electricity demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative is part of Kyrgyzstan’s National Energy Programme 2035, which was approved by the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament) in June 2024.
Under the agreement, the EDB will provide financial backing to prepare the necessary project documentation, including a pre-feasibility study. The parties will jointly explore the project’s financial model, estimate capital costs, evaluate social and environmental impacts, and develop technical solutions and government support measures to ensure its success.
“The construction of the 1.3 GW Suusamyr-Kokomeren HPP Cascade will be a crucial step in strengthening Kyrgyzstan’s energy independence. This major project will not only meet the country’s domestic electricity needs but also position Kyrgyzstan as a leading exporter of clean energy in the region, which will significantly boost the economy and create thousands of new jobs,” said Sanzhar Bolotov, Kyrgyzstan’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce.
The Suusamyr-Kokomeren HPP Cascade is part of the EDB’s broader Central Asian Water and Energy Complex initiative, which aims to enhance regional water and energy cooperation and address socio-economic challenges. The project aligns with the EDB’s 2022–2026 Country Strategy for Kyrgyzstan, emphasizing the modernization and construction of hydroelectric infrastructure.
