Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 7, The New South Wales (NSW) state government in Australia has reported a key achievement in the development of the toll-free M12 Motorway. As of now, 14 kilometers of the road have been completed, aligning with the planned timeline and financial estimates. This progress ensures direct access to the Western Sydney International Airport, set to open in 2026.
The M12 Motorway is set to connect to the Western Sydney International Airport.
The finished portion of the M12 is undergoing final enhancements, including landscaping, signage placement, and the addition of safety features. When fully operational, this motorway will connect the new airport at Badgerys Creek to Sydney’s broader motorway system, linking areas such as Elizabeth Drive and The Northern Road. Meanwhile, an additional 2 kilometers, extending to the M7 Motorway, remains under construction. This section offers the public a potential route from The Northern Road to near the Elizabeth Drive off-ramp at Cecil Park once completed.
The entire 16-kilometer motorway, valued at A$2.1 billion (US$1.32 billion), is expected to open to traffic in 2026. Construction efforts are now focused on integrating the remaining segments and completing final touches. Recognized as one of NSW’s largest transport projects, it has provided jobs for 8,223 people, including 5,472 local workers. The central and western parts of the M12 were finalized by Transport for NSW’s partners, Seymour Whyte and the CPB Georgiou Group joint venture.
Work to link the M12 with the M7 is progressing steadily. A newly aligned Wallgrove Road at Cecil Hills has opened, supporting the building of interchange ramps. Bridge construction continues alongside upgrades to the M7. The M12 forms part of a wider initiative by the federal and NSW governments to improve Western Sydney’s road network.
NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King stated: “We’re building Australia’s future by delivering the road and rail connections this new airport needs to connect it to Western Sydney and beyond. With freight services due to start at the airport next year, this new road will ensure trucks can move quickly and easily from the airport to sites like the new Moorebank intermodal terminal and the rest of the Sydney road network.”
Separately, in March 2025, the Australian federal government and NSW state government committed A$1.1 billion to accelerate significant road improvements in Sydney’s North West region. This funding aims to enhance infrastructure and support growing transport demands. The M12 Motorway project reflects a coordinated effort to strengthen connectivity and economic activity in Western Sydney, with completion on track for the following year.
