Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 14, PJM Interconnection, a U.S.-based grid operator, has launched a multiyear partnership with Google and Tapestry to enhance electricity system efficiency using artificial intelligence. The collaboration, announced recently, aims to streamline PJM’s process for integrating new energy resources into the grid, serving 67 million people across 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
Tapestry, an Alphabet-ncubated project, will focus on developing a suite of AI models and tools.
The initiative centers on developing AI tools and models, powered by Google Cloud and Google DeepMind, through Tapestry, an Alphabet-incubated project. These tools will accelerate the connection of energy sources to the grid, improving power reliability and affordability. By optimizing the planning process, the partnership seeks to reduce the time needed to process new interconnection applications, addressing the rising demand for electricity in PJM’s region.
Aftab Khan, PJM’s executive vice-president for operations, planning, and security, emphasized the importance of innovation, stating: “Innovation will be critical to meeting the demands on the future grid, and we’re leveraging some of the world’s best capabilities with these cutting-edge tools to further reduce completion times for new service requests.” The effort builds on PJM’s ongoing automation improvements and a reformed interconnection process started in July 2023.
Tapestry’s contribution includes creating a unified platform that integrates PJM’s existing databases and tools. This secure system will enable grid planners and project developers to collaborate efficiently, speeding up data processing and grid planning. The AI-driven tools will also support the integration of various energy sources currently awaiting connection in PJM’s queue, ensuring a reliable and swift transition to the grid.
Amanda Peterson Corio, Google Data Center’s energy head, highlighted the broader impact, stating: “We see the opportunity to help secure America’s electricity needs with the many resources seeking to provide energy to the grid, and believe this work with PJM is a great catalyst for innovation across the United States.” The collaboration aligns with efforts to meet growing energy demands driven by technological advancements.
In early 2025, PJM projected a 58-gigawatt increase in peak summer demand by 2035, largely due to expanding AI applications. The partnership with Google and Tapestry positions PJM to address these challenges by enhancing grid efficiency and planning capabilities. By leveraging advanced technology, the initiative supports a more sustainable and responsive energy infrastructure, benefiting millions of consumers while fostering innovation in the U.S. energy sector.
